Study Guides
These study guides are a work in progress, and will likely continue to be so. I have attempted to use a variety of methods to test and enhance reading comprehension, as well as an understanding of writing techniques: characterization, imagery, dialogue, etc. Feel free to alter or edit these study guides to meet classroom requirements. Suggestions are always welcome!

In the future...or eventually...I will be adding some of my general workshop exercises to this area. These will be exercises designed to challenge readers with their own projectssomething to challenge the "writer within" and stretch the writing muscles! In the meantime, check out the resources in the newly revised Links section below.

Links
Back by request...links to sites both useful and entertaining. Let's face it, there's a lot of junky sites out there. These aren't them. Checked and updated November, 2004.
Homework
Ask Dr. Math. Stumped over that math problem? You need Dr. Math. Select your grade level and ask away, or check out the archives of previously-asked questions.
B.J. Pinchbeck's Homework Helper. "If you can't find it here, then you just can't find it." Homework help is arranged by subject in this award-winning site.
Bob Miller's Light Walk. Artist Bob Miller's "Light Walk" is an eye-opening experience for students and teachers alike. His unique discoveries will change the way you look at light, shadow, and images.
Britannica. The world's best-known encyclopedia is now online, the ideal resource for that homework project. The site contains the complete, updated Encyclopædia Britannica plus many other resources in an ad-free site. Full access is by payment; however, the prices are not unreasonable given the extent of what's available.
Coolmath.com. An amusement park of mathematics, designed for the pure enjoyment of math (good luck with that). Includes links for both students and teachers.
Factmonster. Has an atlas, almanac, dictionary, encyclopedia, and much more. A good source for information for homework study or for the just plain curious.
How Stuff Works. A great place to come to learn about how things work in the world around you. Go inside a smoke detector, dissect your telephone, find out how Christmas works, or time, rainbows, solar cells...
Lifetime of Colour. This is a very worthwhile site for potential artists, put together by a manufacturer of art supplies. Projects, games, teacher's resources and more.
Yuckiest Site on the Internet. Extra kudos to this site for making me feel like a kid again! Aimed at younger surfers, this one still packs a wallop that will horrify older teens and adults. Check out "Gross and Cool Body", which answers questions you always wanted to know about certain functions of the human body, but were too grossed out to ask. Actually, a very cool and useful site, boldly, colourfully, and intelligently done!
Teacher's Resources
Busy Teachers' Web Site K-12. Not just for teachers.! Contains useful links organised by subject, leading to more useful links, leading to more useful links... All in all, a very valuable resource.
Grassroots Schools OnLine. A directory of Canadian schools connected to the Internet, either by email or with a web page. Not all-inclusive by any means, but check it out...you just might find your own school!
School Violence. Maybe there's a way. This is an invaluable page of links to Canadian and U.S. sites dealing with everything from school bullies to gang activity prevention. Now, more than ever, these pages need reading.
Seasons Greetings...any time of the year! Aimed at teachers of Modern Languages, this unique page contains links to all things Christmas, including English, French, German and Spanish sites. There's also links to similar pages for Valentine's, Easter, and Halloween. Beautifully done.
Warning Signs Of Teen Violence. A site for teens, and everyone else. Features reasons for violence, recognizing warning signs in others, dealing with anger in yourself, what you can do, more. Thoughtfully written, informative site.

Books and Reading
Canadian Children's Book Centre. The CCBC promotes and encourages the reading, writing and illustrating of Canadian children's books.
CANSCAIP. The Canadian Society of Children's Authors, Illustrators, and Performers. A group of professionals in the field of children's culture with members from all parts of Canada.
Project Gutenberg. Many of the world's classic novels are available right over the Internet, legally free, delivered right to your screen. From Dickens to Mark Twain, Aristotle to Jules Verne, here are the complete texts of the original novels! Might come in real handy when that essay is due and you can't find your copy of Hamlet...
Reading Rants. Good site that reviews books for teens. Sections include: Boy Meets Book, Hip History, Gen-X Files, more.
Saskatchewan Writes! The Saskatchewan Writers Guild database of writers. Browse by author or search by author, title, availability, etc. A good resource for teachers.
Sherlockian Holmepage. Everything you wanted to know about Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street, including links to sites with pictures, sound bites, even the original books and stories!
Young Writers Club. For kids and teens who love to write. In addition to links for young writers, there's a huge database of stories written by other kids. And yes, you have the opportunity to share your own stories! Features "Hall Of Fame", "Tips For Young Writers", "Create Your Own Home Page", more.
Young Adult Literature. Resources to support the curriculum in English and Language Arts for K-12 educators, part of the Internet School Library Media Centre.

Teen Life
Teen Health Website. Information on Sex & Relationships, Alcohol & Drugs, Smoking, Physical Activity, Mental Health, Healthy Eating, and Injury Prevention. Deals intelligently with questions that teens might not feel comfortable asking.
Teen Missions International. Readers of The Freedom Run might find this one interesting. Here is a real-life Christian organization similar to the one in "Freedom", that sends teens on overseas missions. Check it out...there are teams you can join all over the planet!

Of Social Interest
An American's Guide to Canada. Written by an American who's been in the Great White North since '92. Good reference for school projects, this one is brimming with facts. Even Canadians will find this interesting, since it points out things taken for granted in Canada that might seem strange to Americans. Examples: "Milk comes in plastic bags as well as in cartons and jugs." "Restaurants serve vinegar with French fries." "There is no mail delivered on Saturdays.") All in all, a very worthwhile and entertaining site.
Seti Screensaver
. SETI@home is a scientific experiment that will harness the power of hundreds of thousands of Internet-connected computers in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). You can participate by running a program that downloads and analyses radio telescope data. Little green men not included.
Music, Movies & Media
Canadian Music Encyclopedia. Whether it's rock, rap, country or whatever, this site has it all! Discographies, biographies, photos and links to your favourite stars, from the Barenaked Ladies to Celine Dion.
Internet Movie Database. Probably the largest, most detailed database of movies you will find anywhere. If you haven't used this yet, what are you waiting for? Contains every Maltin review just for starters. Find out where a movie (or TV show) was made, who directed it, what alternative endings there are, what other films the actors starred in...the level of detail is unbelievable. My favourite features: Trivia and Goofs.
Minnie Riperton
. A fansite by Sundown Lady. Minnie's music was so much more than "Lovin' You", her 1975 hit and best-remembered tune. Explore the music with discography, biography, etc. Beautifully done.
Radio-Locator. Be cosmopolitan...listen to radio stations from Sydney, Hong Kong, Moscow, Wherever. You may never listen to local radio again.
Tommy's List of Live Cam Worldwide. Time on your hands? This will fix that. An award-winning site, featuring webcams from all over the world.
Spooky Stuff
St. Louis Ghost Train. The ghost train has been a part of St. Louis, Saskatchewan for as long as anyone can remember. When the rail line was abandoned and the tracks removed years ago, some thought the phenomenon would end. It didn't...
St. Louis Ghost Train Light...Explained! Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the woods. Here lies the tale of Yours Truly, the author himself, tramping through countryside the Blair Witch wouldn't touch, in search of the elusive light. Is it real? Or is it something else? And what did I just step in?
St. Louis Light Information Page. This one takes a more investigative approach to the mystery of St. Louis, Saskatchewan's mysterious light. Includes Photos and Description, Stories About the Light, Myth and Fact.
Silly But Fun
Love Calculator. Strictly for fun. Are you compatible with the one you long for? Take this test and find out! Good for one laugh or several.
Make-a-Flake. Remember those round snowflakes you made in school? Now you can try out designs without using up precious paper! It took me a couple of trys to figure out just how this worked - and now I'm hooked. Go there. Make snowflakes, and put 'em in the gallery. I dare you to make just one.
